Yoga Basics

New to Yoga, and want to understand the ins and outs of this amazing practice?  Here's a link to an informative article by Yoga Journal:

General Ettiquette for Yoga Studios

Most Yoga studios have similar expectations (Do's and Don't's).  Here are a few of the most important:

  • Arrive early (or at least on time) for class.  This gives you a chance to get settled and begin to quiet yourself before class. If you do happen to arrive late, please come in very quietly and settle quickly.  If you are more than 10 minutes late, we ask that you please re-schedule.

  • Turn off electronics.  Cell-phones are a no-no (except in emergencies). Please leave them in your bag and turn off ringers.

  • Try to bring your own hydration, in a sealed drink-bottle or thermos.  (JY has water to share, but supplies are limited).

  • Shoes off!  Take them off at the door, or as soon as possible, and store them in the closet.

  • No socks during practice--except those specially made for yoga practice.  (Check out Toe Sox for some cool ones).

  • Keep talking to a minimum. Different studios have different rules about this.  At JY, we encourage interaction prior to class as a way to build community.  We do ask that it be respectful, and on the quieter side, if possible.
